Sushi Kappo Yamanaka, AMU Plaza, Hakata, Fukuoka

We were looking for a place to satiate our sushi craving in Fukuoka and the restaurant we had identified earlier was unfortunately full. Knowing full well that walking into any random establishment would be very risky, we decided to look for one with a queue which would be indicative of either a high quality or low price (hopefully a combination of both). [When one is on holiday in Japan with limited meal times, it is essential that every meal is carefully selected for maximum satisfaction]

We found a great place on the 9th floor of AMU Plaza just above the JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka, and queued for about 30 mins (very quick by Midori standards)

They had an English menu. I went for the 3000Y set.

What the Japanese menu looked like

We managed to get counter seats! Yay

The chirashi sushi box- it had an amazing variety of stuff; with uni, ikura, oroto, shako, anago, hotate and heaps more.

We had a cold sake from Kyoto

First up- snapper

Then otoro

Ika with minuscule flakes of grated citrus peel just enough to tingle the tastebuds but not actually cause a distraction

Botan ebi

Two in one- the most divine combination of uni and ikura

Aji

Salmon lightly aburi-ed

The deep fried head of the botan ebi - this was absolutely yummy

Awabi

Anago

Tamago yaki - deliciously light and creamy

Maguro maki

A radish maki

Yuzu ice cream and ocha

It wasn't what I would call a great value for money meal, but it was definitely high quality and extremely enjoyable - and the texture of the warm vinegared rice and fish together was difficult to top for such a mainstream establishment. Definitely a place I would go back to, if I was in the area.
