One of our most reliable stops for a good hearty meal is Soup Kitchen, and thankfully there are a couple of branches close to home. We've been happily making use of the groupon vouchers that give a 50% discount, but would go there with or without the discount anyway.
It's not their chicken that is good, but it's the ginger dipping sauce that goes with it that is fabulous. I normally detest ginger, but this version goes so well with white rice that I can eat it neat.
The Ah Kong sweet potato leaves are also good with steamed rice. I like their sambal mix.
Another looks at the ginger sauce.
Their kai lan with danggui is also very interesting - I've never eaten herbal veggies before.
Another of my favourite dishes is the home style tofu, which is essentially deep fried tofu topped with a sweetish soy sauce reminiscent of the sauce they spoon over soon hock. I love the crunchy bits of hae bee in the mixture.
A meal for 2 people, including tea and taxes, comes up to just under $50 so it's not all that cheap. But it's one of those places to head to if you want a reliable meal with no surprises.
