We went to this place 3 Sundays in a row after church with various people because when you find a good thing, you milk it for all its worth - until it either gets too expensive, too crowded or the quality drops. It's probably getting too crowded these days, although we've never had problems finding a table.

I love their seafood fried rice. Amazing wok hei.

Their assam laksa is very thick and rich - better than it looks in the photo. Much better.

What the noodles look like. Very good quality assam laksa with lots of fish.

Their char kuey teow was all right - not to-die-for amazing, but decent.

I liked the sambal kangkong - it's a simple dish but not everyone can do it well. The stems were crunchy and the sambal was sufficiently tasty without being too salty. 

 

Their salted egg prawns were not too bad as well, but a bit pricy at $20plus for less than 10 prawns.

We tried their prawn noodle soup and it was a pretty good bowl as well, with a thick rich stock.

We also ordered some clams that came with a nice thick sweet sauce that had a bit of dark soy, sambal and chilli.

The clams were fresh and large - definitely worth ordering again.

Penang Road Cafe

The husband and I went with the mother to try out this relatively new Penang place at Novena that we had read about in another food blog. We weren't expecting very much, but were pleasantly surprised to find that the food was pretty decent.

The mother liked the hae mee, which I found to be quite flavourful also.

The char kuey teow was average - the kuey teow was probably slightly over fried and it could have had a little more sauce.

The ju hee char was really enjoyable though. Lovely and sweet.

We also tried the rojak and nutmeg tea, which I enjoyed. On the whole, it's a pretty decent place for a quick lunch if you're not expecting the spectacular.

Penang Kitchen at Coronation Road

While I really like the food at Penang Kitchen, I've always found it overpriced for the type of food they serve, which essentially is street food or hawker food. Still, I was craving assam laksa big time and needed a quick fix that I was confident about.

Their assam laksa ($7.90) is always hot and steaming, and chock-full of ingredients - fish flakes, cucumber, pineapple and onions. And it's a fairly substantial serve, so you're always guaranteed to walk away full.

The husband had the herbal duck soup with mee sua ($9.50) - this was excellent. I'll be back there again to have the soup on its own, without the mee sua which I felt diluted it somewhat.

Having forgotten how substantial the assam laska was, I badgered the husband into ordering a char kuey teow ($7.90) to share. The char kuey teow was the winner of the lot - hot and spicy, with really supple kuey teow with lots of egg.

All in, it was a good and quick lunch, but on the expensive side and not really justifiable. For really large quantities of good Penang food, I've found the buffet at the Penang Place in Jurong to be extremely good value for money for about $20 for dinner. The Kings Hotel buffet is really good too, but paying $40 for a lunch buffet is a bit difficult to justify as well.
