Peramakan at Keppel Club

We headed to Peramakan one Sunday night for dinner, and it was one of the most memorable Peranakan meals I've had in a long time. The food at Peramakan was of reasonably good quality, and it's definitely a place to go back to when it's too difficult to get to Guan Hoe Soon in the east.

There are many ways to do beef rendang; some make the meat more burnt, others use more coconut milk and even more assam. Peramakan's was slightly more lemak, and not very sour. Wonderful with steamed rice.
The winged bean with prawn sambal was nice, but the lady's fingers with sambal we had at a subsequent visit was even better.

Grilled sotong with sambal - the sotong was very nicely done, sufficiently cooked without being too hard.

Babi pongteh - this was ok, rather fatty and oily. And as a staunch believer in my own family recipe, I still think that nothing comes close to what the grandmother used to make.

The same for the ayam buah keluak - it was pretty decent, although I prefer the stuffed sort, after having grown up eating it that way.

I loved their bakwan kepeting soup - it was fragrant without being too salty or oily.
Their chendol is definitely not as good as Guan Hoe Soon's.

But their durian pengat was amazing. Simply heavenly. http://www.peramakan.com/
